About my handmade futon mattresses
I handcraft each of my futon mattresses here on the Sunshine Coast to capture the authentic feel of traditional Japanese designs while offering comfort options for everyone. While Japanese futons are traditionally quite firm, I craft mine in medium-firm to firm densities—the thinner models providing more firmness, and the thicker ones offering a plusher feel.
My collection features both synthetic and natural options. Select models combine a man-made foam core with premium A-Grade Australian cotton layers, while my All Natural version features an Organic Latex core wrapped in cotton and wool.
I cover each mattress in durable, certified organic cotton herringbone twill. Unlike conventional designs, I secure my mattresses with strong hand-tufting instead of buttons, ensuring nothing digs into you as your futon naturally settles over time. For the perfect natural futon mattress Sunshine Coast home owners will love, it simply has to be Zen Beds.
15CM COTTON FOAM CORe
I handcraft my 15cm cotton foam core futon with meticulous attention to detail. It features 2 x 5cm layers of 100% Australian cotton on either side of a 7cm thickness Dunlop brand high-density foam core. This combination creates a firm mattress that's ideal whether you're using it as a sofa bed or as your bed mattress.
The cover is made from strong 12oz herringbone twill that's GOTS certified 100% organic cotton. I hand-tuft each futon using the traditional method with strong thread. This careful technique ensures that as your futon naturally settles over time, you won't feel any uncomfortable pressure points—unlike those tufted with buttons which can dig into your body.
All Natural Organic Latex Core with Outer Layer Wool Wrap
The ultimate all-natural futon for those who want only the finest natural materials. This premium option costs more because I've spared no expense in creating the perfect sleep experience—featuring an Organic Latex core and an Australian Wool finishing layer that complements the plush cotton layers on both sides.
I wrap this futon in an organic cotton cover, then hand-tuft and knot it with strong thread using traditional techniques. This careful craftsmanship ensures you'll never be jabbed by buttons as your futon naturally settles over time.
This is truly a completely natural sleep solution. Our organic latex futon mattresses are handcrafted right here on the Sunshine Coast. Perfect for those wanting the very best that nature has to offer.
20cm cotton foam core
I handcraft my 20cm thickness cotton foam core futon with three 5cm thick layers of premium Australian cotton, positioned on either side of 7cm of Dunlop Firm Density Foam that's made in Brisbane.
This careful combination creates a firm mattress with just the right touch of plushness—not too hard, not too soft, but perfectly balanced for comfortable sleep. The cover is crafted from GOTS certified 12oz herringbone twill cotton, ensuring both durability and organic quality.
This versatile futon is ideal whether you're using it on a sofa bed where the mattress needs to fold at a 90-degree angle, or as a flat bed mattress for everyday use. Each one is hand-tufted using traditional methods for lasting comfort and quality.

Traditional Japanese futons are quite firm. I make mine in medium-firm to firm, so there’s an option for everyone. The thinner 15cm models are firmer, and the 20cm gives you a bit more plushness. If you’re unsure, come and lie on them at my Caloundra showroom, or give me a call and we’ll work out which suits you.

Both cotton foam core futons work well on a sofa bed. The 15cm is firm and folds easily. The 20cm folds to 90 degrees too, with a touch more plushness for everyday sleeping. Tell me how often it’ll be used as a bed and I’ll point you to the right one.

Yes, you can, but I don’t recommend it. Like latex mattresses, futons need to go on a slat base so air can circulate around both sides. Without airflow, moisture can build up underneath. All my bed frames and sofa beds have slat bases for exactly this reason.

A cotton futon naturally settles and firms up a little as the cotton compresses, and that’s part of its character. I hand-tuft every futon with strong thread rather than buttons, so as it settles nothing digs into you. Turning and rotating it regularly keeps it even and comfortable.

My cotton foam core futons have a 7cm Dunlop brand firm foam centre, made in Brisbane, between layers of A-Grade Australian cotton. My all-natural futon replaces the foam with an organic latex core, adds an Australian wool wrap, and contains no synthetic materials at all. It costs more, but it’s the choice for anyone who wants a completely natural sleep. Both have a GOTS-certified organic cotton herringbone twill cover.
